Benign enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia)

Indication:

This medicine contains the active substance finasteride, which belongs to a group of medicines called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It reduces enlarged prostate.
Finasteride is used:
- Treatment and control of benign (i.e., noncancerous) enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia — BPH).
- Causes contraction of an enlarged prostate, improves urine flow and reduces the discomfort associated with BPH, and also reduces the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgery.

Dosage:

Always take this medication exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, the usual dose is:
- 1 film-coated tablet (5 mg finasteride), taken once daily.
Even if improvement can be seen after a short time, treatment may need to be continued for at least six months to achieve a successful response to treatment.
Your doctor may prescribe another medicine (doxazosin) in addition to this medicine to better control your BPH.
Your doctor will tell you how long you need to take this medicine. Do not interrupt treatment prematurely, otherwise symptoms may return.
Liver dysfunction
- To date, there is no information on the use of finasteride in patients with impaired liver function.
Impaired kidney function
- No dosage adjustment is required. To date, no studies have been conducted in patients undergoing dialysis.
Elderly patients
- No dosage adjustment is required.
